Safari holidays to Victoria Falls Zambia

Zambia is home to Victoria Falls, which is located between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the Zambezi River.

At 1,708 metres wide and 108 metres high, the Victoria Falls Zambia – also referred to as “Mosi-o-Tunya,” (the Smoke that Thunders) – are the largest in the world.

A stunning feature of the falls is First Gorge, which is the whole depth of the chasm that the water drops. Its depth varies from 80 metres on its western end to 108 metres in its centre.

Victoria Falls has a single outlet – a 110-metre wide gap more than half of the way across the breadth of the falls from the western side, where the Zambezi River flows into the Victoria Falls gorges.

Another interesting aspect of Victoria Falls is that, unlike many other waterfalls, there are no mountains or deep valleys to create the waterfall. There is just a flat plateau stretching out in all directions for several miles.

To add to the beauty of the First Gorge , Zambia Victoria Falls has six more gorges, commonly referred to as the principal gorges. These gorges are magically placed in a zigzag pattern through which the Zimbabwe River flows.

The Second Gorge forces the Zimbabwe River to make a sharp, right-angle turn, creating a deep pool that is christened the Boiling Pot due to relatively smooth water at lower levels, and large, slow swirls and heavy boiling turbulence at higher levels.

Additionally, there are the Third, Fourth, and Fifth gorges, as well as the Songwe and Batoka gorges. The Songwe Gorge boasts the deepest fall (140 metres), while the Third Gorge has a power station. Victoria Falls will offer you magnificent viewing on your holiday in Zambia.

While on a Victoria Falls holiday in Zambia, you should consider taking a canoe safari across the lower portion of the Zambezi River. Here, you will get the chance to view a wide range of wild animals. Since you will be travelling in a canoe, there will be least disturbance to the animals. In addition, a canoe safari will take you to the remotest areas that cannot be accessed by vehicles or on foot.

The best time to tour the Victoria Falls is during the months of April and May, immediately after the long rains, although the spray is sometimes so thick making it hard to view the full width of the falls.

To enjoy the splendid rock formations and gorges, you should schedule your holiday at the end of the dry season from October to December when the water is low.
